… the 70 years since these maximums were reached was enough to “make you sceptical”
.
“David Evans, a former adviser to the Australian Greenhouse Office, the precursor to the Department of Climate Change, said that although events such as those of January 1939 were too localised to draw implications on global warming, the 70 years since these maximums were reached was enough to “make you sceptical”.
“The debate has changed,” he said. He predicted that by 2010, the only people who would believe in global warming would be “those who have a financial interest in it, the politically correct and those who believe in big government. Everyone else will think it’s a load of rubbish.”

Symptom Of Our Times
Windmill-Tilting for the Mad-At-Heart and the Extortionist
.
The story above is a symptom of a serious illness affecting our times.  It will not be terminal for life on earth. It may be terminal for way-of-life in the western world and the wellbeing of those “grandchildren” held aloft as a banner of our responsibility to mend our profligate ways of plenty and retreat to the huts of the noble savage who lived in such harmony with nature that he was fertiliser before he was forty.
Global warming does not threaten our very existence.  It is more likely to enhance it; if, of course, it is even happening. It would certainly be preferable to global cooling, and there are signs of that. It would also be preferable to even inter-global nukes; or is working against that too hard? too thankless? lacking in financial return?
“The Alarmist fantasy world is a function of society’s massive accumulation of wealth.” JP noted recently on Watts Up With That?
Put another way: “Right now we can afford to be crazy.” Or will the financial turmoil of our times remove the luxury of craziness? Losing what we will lose in financial comfort may have the effect of shocking us back to a realisation of the bounty our forefathers have deeded us; and of what a benign period in the harshness of climate-always-changing we live.
In 1604, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra gave us a blueprint for the pastime of fools. But Don Quixote never turned it into extortion.

A Very Convenient Lie For A Very Malicious Purpose
.
They are bitter, miserable people. Life’s losers who are incapable of embracing the wonders and joys of simply being alive; let alone celebrating the bright and the beautiful.
As children, did they ever have their eyes spring wide in wonder at simple things? or have their minds been closed from birth against amazement and joy?
Perhaps most of them are content to fight their misery with grouch and complaint; and we can feel sorry ~ and probably irritated ~ with their ways.  But when they seek out and gain power to inflict their misery on those around them, then we should call enough.
They become a danger to us all.
This is malicious, as they flail about paying out on humanity at large for the deal they believe life dole them.

Some clips from a comprehensive and balanced article on this big, wide, wonderful world we live in:
“The earth is now on the brink of entering another Ice Age, according to a large and compelling body of evidence from within the field of climate science. Many sources of data which provide our knowledge base of long-term climate change indicate that the warm, twelve thousand year-long Holocene period will rather soon be coming to an end, and then the earth will return to Ice Age conditions for the next 100,000 years.
“Elements of the astronomical theory of Ice Age causation were first presented by the French mathematician Joseph Adhemar in 1842, it was developed further by the English prodigy Joseph Croll in 1875, and the theory was established in its present form by the Czech mathematician Milutin Milankovich in the 1920s and 30s.”

Manic Tulips and Global Warming…
.
I thought I was reading finance, and it is all about finance, except… well except the Great Global Warming Scam pokes through every example, conclusion and explanation Stephen Greenspan gives.
.
   Consider:
“The American version of the inheritance scam was perpetrated by a former Illinois farm boy named Oscar Hartzell. While Thérèse Humbert’s victims were a few dozen extremely wealthy and worldly French aristocrats, Hartzell swindled over 100,000 relatively unworldly farmers and shopkeepers throughout the American heartland.  …   The Drake scheme became a social movement, known as “the Drakers” (later changed to “the Donators”) and whole churches and groups of friends — some of whom planned to found a utopian commune with the expected proceeds — would gather to read the latest Hartzell letters from London. Mr. Hartzell was eventually indicted for fraud and brought to trial in Iowa, over great protest by his thousands of loyal investors. In a story about Mr. Hartzell in the New Yorker in 2002, Richard Rayner noted that what “had begun as a speculation had turned into a holy cause.”
.
Utopia …  holy cause … thet’s AGW alright.
.
And  ”Tulipmania …  In the 1630s, tulip-bulb speculation raged in the Netherlands. Prices of some rare bulbs doubled weekly, or even daily, and rose so high that people were investing in shares of one bulb, rather than an entire bulb. The market crashed in February 1637.”
.
It’s worth catching up on these great financial scams of history past, and history present, just to get a broad canvas on which to draw an understanding of what is happening with the global warming scam, and a general overview of just what fools we mortals be.

A letter from by  Pierre R. Latour which is a comprehensive critique of the whole AGW house-of-cards.

” I have learned to read the fine print to confirm whether the scientific methods of Galileo Galilei, Francis Bacon, Isaac Newton, James Clerk Maxwell, Albert Einstein, competent physicians, car mechanics and refinery engineers have been violated. Analysis before synthesis, always.”

“…IPCC Report scenarios. Its hockey stick temperature anomaly scandal, promoted by Al Gore, which created so much chaos, was buried in 2004. The CO2-generated AGW scientific debate was over when scientific consensus discovered it was a massive, deliberate, political hoax.”
Pierre R. Latour, PhD, PE.

It is impressive.  It is powerful.  It is telling in its destruction of cant.

UPDATE ~ The following information is useful in finding this letter. It is under:
Letters to the Editor: “Is the Earth’s thermostat surging forward or limping into retrograde?”
(Reply to the comments of Jeff Temple by Pierre R. Latour, PhD, PE. Houston, Texas), and is reached from the “Hydrocarbon Processing” link below.

Three clips:

“The tenuous link between CO2 greenhouse effects and the Earth’s temperature indicates humanity has no effective manipulated variable to control temperature; the steady-state gain dT/dCO2 is almost zero. If so, the system is uncontrollable. Kyoto will fail no matter what the political consensus may be.”

Whilst in summer in that that land of ragged mountain ranges, of droughts and flooding rains…
Weatherzone reports:
Wet in Wyndham, and other interesting facts
“Wyndham had the heaviest falls for the entire state, reaching a grand total of 573mm so far. This has already been its wettest December in 40 years of records.”
Mmm… another “40 year” event downunder to match the upover 40 mentioned below… This is beginning to seem a real Harley of a cycle.

“It’s the greatest (amount of) snow on the ground for Christmas ever…
“We’re covered. Definitely a white Christmas here,” Environment Canada meteorologist John McIntyre said from Vancouver.
“At the Vancouver airport, where many travellers were stranded because of the weather, 27 centimetres of snow fell on Christmas Eve, setting a weather record.
“It’s the greatest (amount of) snow on the ground for Christmas ever,” said McIntyre. “The airport has 41 (centimetres) on the ground.”

“Nobody knew what do. Except for one little girl…
“Long ago (2006), in the bad old days before IPCC AR4, Toronto got its lowest snowfall in a century. Lake level declines were sure to follow. Would water supplies for lattes be threatened? Even the unthinkable now seemed possible and even likely.”

Air We Breathe Becoming Thinner?
.
Since the middle of the last century ever increasing amounts of air are being withdrawn from the atmosphere.
The full implications of this “thinning” are as yet unknown; but the reasons for it are beyond doubt. It is human induced… a product of an ever richer and advancing civilisation.
Basic questions for science are of how much deeper or more often do we ~ and animals ~ need to breathe to maintain a parity with our ancestors? Or can we all get by with less?
The implications of the effects of this thinner atmosphere with less air available are yet to be quantified.
With India and China, and to a lesser extent, Russia, increasing their production of passenger vehicles by orders of magnitude, massive volumes of air are being compressed and retained in the inner tubes of more and more vehicles.
Whilst vehicles ~ and aircraft ~ are the primary prisons of this air, even the humble football, multiplied by millions worldwide, plays a part in this thinning.
Is humanity prepared to give up the luxury of the pneumatic tube?
Perhaps the answer will come from the next generation of algorean entrepreneurs; even if it really does not matter all that much, anyway?

Merry Christmas ~ and don’t forget to let the balloons down after use.

Cult of Catastrophe

“Historians, long hence, will surely have a fascinating time analysing the rise and fall of the cult of catastrophic ‘global warming’. Even now it is possible to detect close parallels with the pattern of many traditional doomsday cults. And, it is particularly interesting to note that scientists are just as susceptible to such cults as non-scientists.”

And yet another take on “…about protecting free and open inquiry…”
.
“I was told that science was not going to intrude on policy,” Happer explained in 1993.
.
“I had the privilege of being fired by Al Gore, since I refused to go along with his alarmism. I did not need the job that badly,” Happer said this week. Happer is a Professor at the Department of Physics at Princeton University and former Director of Energy Research at the Department of Energy from 1990 to 1993, has published over 200 scientific papers, and is a fellow of the American Physical Society, The American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the National Academy of Sciences.
and
Senator Inhofe said that the continued outpouring of prominent scientists like Happer — who are willing to publicly dissent from climate fears – are yet another strike to the UN, Gore and the media’s claims about global warming. “The endless claims of a ‘consensus’ about man-made global warming grow less-and-less credible every day,” Inhofe said.
