A powerful Australian newspaper, a part of the Murdoch empire, calls for scientific rigour because it believes:

“Distressingly large numbers of people have elevated climate change to something verging on a fundamentalist religion.”

Science must always be contested – even climate change

“IF climate change is real — and “if” is the operative word — every aspect of the phenomenon needs to be picked over and analysed with the utmost rigour. It is too important for anything less. But in parts of the community, rigour and climate change have become mutually exclusive terms.

“Distressingly large numbers of people have elevated climate change to something verging on a fundamentalist religion. True believers draw comfort from endlessly repeating the dogma to each other. Those who demand proof are shunned as heretics.

“This approach might be fashionable, but it is dangerous. It is a reversion to a pre-enlightenment mindset that rejects the essence of the scientific method. And without the mental toughness of science, any public policy on climate change will have all the effectiveness of burnt offerings.”

Unthinking dogma

The Australian – 29 November, 2008

Yesterday upon the stair
   I met a man who wasn’t there.
He wasn’t there again today
Oh how I wish he’d go away.
                            Hughes Mearns. (Antigonish 1899)

Insights too numerous to record here from the you-and-me’s to scientists of international reputation who, one and all, take the future seriously.
The following paragraphs are just to whet the appertite; or perhaps I am using them as bait to draw you in to a truly robust and vital room of the debate…

“Gore says that we should use our understanding of the Maya collapse help us solve the climate crisis, noting that “we need to remember the consequences to civilizations that refused to take environmental concerns seriously”.
“Given what we know of the Maya collapse, what is Gore really saying?
“He is saying that we should take all the IPCC/AWG publications and related papers to the tip and bury them there and put all our efforts into the study and understanding of the reasons for climate dynamics that address every theory except that of IPCC/AWG doctrine.
“Specifically, we should understand as well as we can how climate dynamics are driven by atmospheric/oceanic oscillations, the natural internal dynamics of the climate system and the role of the Sun in climate dynamics.”

Statistician debunks Gore’s climate linkage to the collapse of the Mayan civilisation.

For a long time I thought it must be something in the water; now I wonder if it’s in the rye…

“The poisons of fungi, or mycotoxins as they are called may alter the mental states of those who have ingested them. Such poisonous substances have caused mass psychoses in communities and even nations.”

   Even nations?

Democrats Preparing for Big Push on CO2

“…you can’t back off what the science tells us must be done as a matter of global survival. And so you have to turn this challenge into the economic resurgence — into the economic rebound.” ~ John Kerry, who also said:
“…I think President-elect Obama, in his remarks to the climate change summit that Governor Schwarzenegger held least week, made it very, very clear that after eight years of obstruction and delay and denial, the United States is going to rejoin the world community in tackling this global challenge.”

Mann and Perfect Reconstructions
by Steve McIntyre on November 28th, 2008

“I finally turned over a few stones in Mann’s EIV reconstructions, little suspecting the perfection that awaited me in the cave using the simple and unassuming alter ego shglfulihad_smxx.

“The figure below compares the SH reconstruction to the smoothed (SH) iHAD instrumental version. From the frail instruments of speleothems, bristlecone ring widths and upside-down sediments, Mann has achieved something divine – a “perfect” reconstruction.”

The Grapes of Wrath…

These facts are inconsistent with the notion that “global warming” is occurring, still less that it is dangerous. The Sun continues to show very few sunspots. Many solar physicists now predict at least half a century of global cooling, which would be a far greater and more destructive problem than a little warming.      Obama is not correct to say, “The science is not in dispute.”

Obama on the ‘urgency’ of combating ‘global warming’
By The Viscount Monckton of Brenchley
American Thinker – November 26, 2008

And one more paragraph from this far ranging article:

Obama is wrong to say, “We’ve seen record drought”. In the United States, the droughts of the first half of the 20th century were considerably more severe than anything that has been seen since. John Steinbeck set his novel The Grapes of Wrath in the severe drought of the Great Plains in the 1930s. Patterns of flood and drought have fluctuated throughout the ages, and there has been no discernible or significant alteration in these patterns in recent decades. Indeed, the UN’s climate panel specifically gives warnings against attributing individual droughts or floods to anthropogenic “global warming”.

Glaciers in Norway, Alaska, growing again

Scandinavian nation reverses trend, mirrors results in Alaska, elsewhere.

After years of decline, glaciers in Norway are again growing, reports the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE). The actual magnitude of the growth, which appears to have begun over the last two years, has not yet been quantified, says NVE Senior Engineer Hallgeir Elvehøy.

“…essentially Plimer’s message is that the idea humans cause climate change has become a fundamentalist religion which is corrupting science. It is embedded with a fear of nature and embraced principally by city people who have lost touch with nature.”

Beware the church of climate alarm
Miranda Divine

She also notes just how obscene the radical movement promoting disaster has become when:

“The New York Times opened a profile of Klaus, 67, this week with a quote from a 1980s communist secret agent’s report, claiming he behaves like a “rejected genius”, and asserts there is “palpable fear” he will “embarrass” the EU.”

A major newspaper in the USA using “…a quote from a 1980s communist secret agent’s report…” to smear one who disputes their belief in man-made climate change is, simply, shocking.

“Land of the Free”? It does not sound like it.

I quoted this New York Times report (see below) a couple of days ago (“Santa” Klaus Is Coming To Town!); and have worried since that some people may not have picked up that the Times’ piece is a smear.

In fact the coming of Czech President, Vaclav Klaus, to the presidency of the Eropean Union next year gives a very real hope for sanity prevailing.

Miranda’s piece has given me the opportunity to raise this again.

And keep a watch out for Adelaide professor Ian Plimer’s new book “Heaven And Earth: The Missing Science Of Global Warming”, to be published early next year.

Adjusting Temperatures for the ENSO and the AMO

Watts Up With That?

“One of the other interesting items in the essay is about the El Nino event in 1878. Bill writes:

The 1877-78 El Nino was the biggest event on record.  The anomaly peaked at +3.4C in Nov, 1877 and by Feb, 1878, global temperatures had spiked to +0.364C or nearly 0.7C above the background temperature trend of the time.

Clearly the oceans ruled the climate, and it appears they still do.” (Anthony Watts)

   And a further clip:

“The divergence, however, is going to be harder to explain in just a few years since the ENSO and AMO-adjusted warming observations are tracking farther and farther away from the global warming model’s track.  As the RSS satellite log warming chart will show later, temperatures have in fact moved even farther away from the models since 1979.”

The commenters, expert and amateur, take it from there to add enlightenment, question and opinion.   Well worth joining in as a watcher or more where education unfolds as another step is taken in the debate.

Lovely! Erika Lovley…

“Climate change skeptics on Capitol Hill are quietly watching a growing accumulation of global cooling science and other findings that could signal that the science behind global warming may still be too shaky to warrant cap-and-trade legislation.”

Scientists urge caution on global warming

Remember what David Archibald said?

”Our generation has known a warm, giving Sun, but the next generation will suffer a Sun that is less giving, and the Earth will be less fruitful.”

David Archibald
International Conference on Climate Change
March, 2008

“Do we live in a special time in which the laws of physics and nature are suspended? No, we do not. Can we expect relationships between the Sun’s activity and climate, that we can see in data going back several hundred years, to continue for at least another 20 years? With absolute certainty.”

“Santa” Klaus Is Coming To Town!

“Decades later, Mr. Klaus, the 67-year-old president of the Czech Republic — an iconoclast with a perfectly clipped mustache — continues to provoke strong reactions. He has blamed what he calls the misguided fight against global warming for contributing to the international financial crisis, branded Al Gore an “apostle of arrogance” for his role in that fight, and accused the European Union of acting like a Communist state.

“Now the Czech Republic is about to assume the rotating presidency of the European Union and there is palpable fear that Mr. Klaus will embarrass the world’s biggest trading bloc…”

Global Warming Alarmism is Unacceptable and Should be Confronted

By Vaclav Klaus, 10/1/2008

“As if this wasn’t enough, in the recent years we came to witness yet another major attack on freedom and free markets, an attack based on environmentalism and – in particular – its global warming variant. The explicitly stated intentions of global warming activists are frightening. They want to change us, to change the whole mankind, to change human behavior, to change the structure and functioning of society, to change the whole system of values which has been gradually established during centuries. These intentions are dangerous and their consequences far-reaching. These people want to restrict our freedom. It is our duty to say NO.”

Two-Mile-Deep Antarctic Ice Core Reveals Stupidity of AGW Catastrophism

The extraordinary conclusions of the Epica 2008 “Quaternary Climate” scientific conference (Nov 10-13, Venice, Italy) have elicited little interest in the media.

It’s anybody’s guess if that’s related to the fact that those results clearly and evidently show that

   1. the Earth’s climate has been wildly oscillating between cold and warmth for at least 800,000 years, long before any sizable man-made intervention…

Then another four “points” before further enlightening information…

The Unbearable Nakedness of CLIMATE CHANGE

You Don’t Live In A Computer-Generated Virtual World…

“My presidency will mark a new chapter in America’s leadership on climate change,” Obama said in a video message to governors and others attending a Los Angeles summit on the issue. (AP)

“Leadership? Where to? Over a cliff? How did we let a bunch of gibbering loons stampede the mob with nonsense claims of planet cooking with trivial increases in an essential trace gas? Get a grip people! You don’t live in a computer-generated virtual world so you are in absolutely no danger from virtual planet cooking.”

New Ice Age Predicted — But Averted by Global Warming?

Mason Inman for National Geographic News

Deep ice sheets would cover much of the Northern Hemisphere thousands of years from now—if it weren’t for us pesky humans, a new study says.

Dangerous Economics

“We hear a great deal about ‘dangerous climate change’ from the likes of Al Gore and Nicholas Stern. By contrast, I wish to speak about dangerous ‘Green’ economics.
“We forget at our peril that a significant portion of the ‘Green’ movement has striven for over 40 years to undermine the whole of our economic system, and to replace it with a ‘Green’ autocracy that can rule all our lives and decisions.”

Global Warming Politics
Philip Stott

“If Dr. Hansen thinks oil company executives should be tried for crimes against humanity for being skeptical about global warming claims and seeking the truth, what should the penalty be for him and his ilk? He is yelling fire in a crowded planet.”

Cold, Hard Facts
Investor’s Business Daily

“Despite record snows and low temperatures around the world last month, a major Al Gore supporter says October was the hottest on record. The only thing being cooked here is not the Earth, but the books.”

September, 1933, and ancient hockey sticks abound, some going up and some going down…

Kinda relaxing to watch it playing with the 75 year cushion of time between on which to check our reactions and assessments without the need to fear we are all about to fry

We all owe ICECAP a vote of thanks for both noting this and providing the original to read and consider.

   Some extracts:

“The phase of weather, or climate, that is attracting attention at the present time is not these short-period changes from warm to cool, and vice versa, for they are always present, but rather an apparent longer-time change to cool periods that seem to be less frequent and of shorter duration, and duration, and warm periods that are more pronounced and persistent.”

“It appears, however, from the data presented with this study that the orthodox conception of the stability of climate needs revision, and that our granddad was not so far wrong, as we have been wont to believe, in his statements about the exit of the old-fashioned winter of his boyhood days.”

“Different kinds of weather come and go in comparatively brief, alternating spurts, as it were, or with short periods of irregular length-cool or cold, then warm, and vice versa-succeeding one another with a continuous recurrence that everyone takes for granted. However, an exhaustive statistical examination of these short period temperature fluctuations fails to disclose any regularity that would afford a basis for forecasting future weather independent of the standard forecasting methods of the Weather Bureau, in which daily synoptic charts play an important role.”

Browse it, or study it at length… then think some on ways in which you could capitalise on this…

Aargh… someone beat us to it.

And remember the earlier story here lest we forget history:

Arctic Ocean Getting Warm; Seals Vanish and Icebergs Melt

“The Arctic ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer and in some places the seals are finding the water too hot, according to a report to the Commerce Department yesterday from Consul Ifft, at Bergen, Norway.”

From that same pesky MONTHLY WEATHER REVIEW, May 1931

A Warm World, Rich In Co2, Is A Green And Pleasant World

…freed from the misery of cold and the despair and hardship cold inflicts on man, animal, and the natural environment alike.
Give thanks for this benign period in the natural swings of climatic excesses which the earth’s history shows, and move forward in the evolution of knowledge which will serve the future well.
To wring hands and cry woe in this time of such bounty is a sin against the magnificence of our forefathers very survival in harsh times past.
They pressed onward in the face of a hostile nature…
…so why do we retreat when that nature smiles on us and pours out a great welcome?

My friend inspires me in the above when he writes:
“Space is a cold place, it is the rarity to find warmth at all. It is ‘the battle’ of this Planet to produce warmth for us all that sees Spring produce the ‘weather’ so often associated with that Season. The battle to displace the cold and have us all again basking in the warmth.”

Taking The Long View…

#1   Climate change ‘to halt ice age’

“A new model of the Earth’s climate suggests that human-made carbon dioxide emissions may prevent the onset of the next ice age.
“Based on geological history, the Earth would be expected to enter a new ice age in 10,000 to 100,000 years.”

(via Paul Shanahan on Watts Up With That?)

#2   More on Whether a Big Chill Is Nigh
By Andrew C. Revkin

“I was on the road yesterday and had no time to collate earth scientists’ reactions to the Nature paper positing that the world, after 450,000 years of climatic turmoil (the ice ages and warm spells) is poised to enter a quasi-permanent big chill (unless we avert it, after dealing with near-term warming, with a subsequent buildup of greenhouse gases).”
   (via ICECAP)

Long View #2 continues with some comments from some very well-known scientists, and seeing a million years into the future is as easy to them as my seeing the next key to strike in completing a wurd (aargh! I meant “word”) here.  It is the kind of science I can relate to.  It is not all about feeding greedy pockets, but about feeding active minds which like to dream… to see visions of a future splendid… or a bit scary… but definitely a future beyond the end of the world is nigh.

Even though some agendas poke through the fabric of their weave. it is worthy of both study and contemplation. Like science used to be before the carpetbaggers scented gold in the fear folks have of divils and bumpy noises in the night.

Comment #7 by “Ed” on Climate Audit on the source story of Long View #2 above regarding: …”big chill”. Hansen’s comment…

“Do I see an alternate causality (albedo i.e. land use) other than CO2 in the above statement that could explain any slight AGM over the last 150 years?”

…the first refuge of scoundrels ~ (Michael Crichton)

“I want to pause here and talk about this notion of consensus, and the rise of what has been called consensus science. I regard consensus science as an extremely pernicious development that ought to be stopped cold in its tracks. Historically, the claim of consensus has been the first refuge of scoundrels; it is a way to avoid debate by claiming that the matter is already settled. Whenever you hear the consensus of scientists agrees on something or other, reach for your wallet, because you’re being had.”  from:
